Why do you do what you do? by Noelle Peterson
Feb 18, 2022Many of us start our career in retail or food services. We need experience and finances.
Some know what they want to do with their life early on.
Regardless of how we start, we have a passion inside us that once ignited stirs the fire and moves us toward our dream.
Until we find that fire, we may wander aimlessly between jobs, schools, or activities.
For me, I had a serious of jobs that fell into my lap. I was able to learn and do many things. When someone I knew needed a certain skill, I was like, "I can do that." So I would dabble in that field for a while and then someone else would need something and I'd jump to another field.
I assisted a chiropractor in his office, and then nannied his boys. I worked for a temp agency, trying to find a company that would fan the fire inside me. We moved overseas and I became a missionary wife. While overseas, the international school needed an aide, then a teacher, then a principal. I filled each role with everything I had during school hours. I assisted the church when we returned home, filling roles, creating a job for myself as I showed my value to the pastors.
At the age of 40, I was realizing that the church role was no longer the fit I needed. I had more skill than was being used. I began looking for a job.
Notice I am using the word job.
I did not know what I wanted as a career. I was looking for something to do. I did not realize who I am.
At almost 50 now, I realize that I am here for a purpose. I have skills and abilities that the world needs. I no longer want a job. I want to help other women get out of their own way and see what the world has for them.
We are created beings and have a purpose on this earth. We are here to serve others. We are here to be a light to the world. We all have unique skills, talents, abilities, perspective and passion.
I am meant for more than office work.
We are meant for more than a job.
Why do you do what you do?
Are you in your job for the paycheck? for the benefits? for a friend?
Have you ever sat back and thought about what you are meant to be doing? What are you on this earth for?
