Relationships - Do they have to be so complicated?

Dec 22, 2021

We start this world with relationships. We have parents, siblings, and extended family and then we make friends as we grow up. Sometimes these all seem to come easy and then we become teenagers and things can get complicated. No one spends the time to teach us relationship skills. We learn about relationships typically from observing our parents, worse we observe relationships on tv, movies or in fiction. It is interesting how something so important is seemingly left to chance.

Relationships take communication and commitment.

As adults, relationships are vital to success. We need strong supportive relationships to encourage us, to guide us, and to correct us. We want and need to grow and change to become the people we were meant to be.

Relationships take work. However the benefits far outweigh the cost. We must be open, honest and vulnerable.

The goal is that relationships are mutually beneficial. What can you give the other person to help them improve? How can you be the person who is willing to receive such assistance and support in order to grow as well?

When relationships struggle, it is often for lack of communication. Remember, we were given two ears and one mouth. We must listen more than we speak. We need to listen with the intent of hearing the other person and not preparing our rebuttal.

Are you hearing the other person? Do you state back to them what you heard? Be a good listener and you'll be better in your relationships.
